The federal government decided to release 185 million euros on Friday for emergency humanitarian aid and the reconstruction of Ukraine, announced Minister of Development Cooperation Caroline Gennez (Vooruit).
The vast majority of this amount, 150 million euros, will be paid to the Belgian development agency Enabel, which will contribute to the reconstruction of schools and hospitals in Ukraine over the next five years. “The emphasis will be on energy efficiency and green energy,” assured the minister. Activities will be concentrated in the Chernihiv region, north of the capital, kyiv.
What if Ukraine loses the war once morest Russia? “This is a scenario that is becoming plausible and the West does not realize the consequences”
For the rest, 15 million euros will be paid to international and multilateral partners already active in Ukraine, 10 million euros have been planned for a World Bank crisis program for Ukraine and an additional 10 million euros will go to the Belgian Investment Company for Developing Countries to support Ukrainian SMEs and agricultural businesses.
According to Caroline Gennez, this new Belgian support plan constitutes an important signal indicating that Belgium “will continue to support Ukraine”, even if Western support is under pressure. “With these new investments, we are helping Ukrainians persevere and showing that we believe in their future,” she concluded.
