Rains kill six people in a week in Cuando Cubango – news

The load of rain that fell on the province of Cuando Cubango, between the end of last week and the beginning of this week, caused the death of six people in that part of the country, according to data from the local Civil Protection and Fire Service which the newspaper OPAÍS had access

The cases occurred mainly in the municipalities of Menongue, Cuchi and Mavinga, where, in addition to three fatalities, the collapse of 20 residences and the partial damage of four others were also recorded.

In the municipality of Cuchi, in particular, there were heavy drops of rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, winds and lightning, last Friday, 8th, causing human, material and environmental damage.

The number of material and human damage caused by the rains, in the province of Cuando Cubango, was considered worrying by the SPCB, due to the fact that, as the data indicates, they were distressing the local command of this body.

To add to the six fatalities, in Cuando Cubango, the rains affected, during the period in question, five people, three of whom lost their lives in Mavinga, inside their homes.

Meanwhile, in Menongue, three citizens aged between 18 and 61, members of the same family, were hit by an atmospheric discharge, in a town eight kilometers from Ndumbo, when they were returning from mining.

However, SPCB staff together with the Angola Institute of Medical Emergencies (INEMA) managed to rescue the victims alive.

Another case of atmospheric discharge resulting from rain followed by strong winds and thunderstorms claimed the same number of victims aged between 18 and 61, in the same municipality. The people affected, who only suffered fainting spells, are members of the same family.

Regarding material damage, in addition to the collapsed houses and churches, the SPCB pointed out the damage to three 32-inch plasma televisions with an equal number of decoders affected.

Data from this body from the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) shows that three trees fell.

Due to these incidents, the SPCB – Cuando Cubango called on the population to close their doors and windows during the rain, as well as avoid staying in open spaces and using cell phones.

“Thus, citizens are urged to keep doors and windows closed while it rains, do not stay in open areas, use cell phones or take refuge under isolated trees,” he warned.
