SK Sturm: Latest News, Updates, and Transfer Market Reactions

After probably the best defeat in the club’s history, the SK Sturm men landed in Graz on Friday. The year came to a nice end with the winter in the European Cup, but those responsible had to announce bad news when they returned.

Goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen was injured more seriously than initially expected and will therefore be out for a long time. The Dutchman tore a cruciate ligament in his left knee in late summer and is now flying to England to have an operation there on Tuesday. Storm doctor Jürgen Mandl is also there. “Highest respect for Kjell for continuing despite the injury. We would not have had the option to react to the transfer market,” said sports director Andreas Schicker. “This shows that he not only has a physical size, but also a human size. A top player, with top character, who did everything for the team. We’ll be happy when he comes back,” said coach Christian Ilzer.

That’s why Graz will probably react once more on the transfer market, they said in a press conference on Friday. A loan player will be brought in for the spring to bridge the time without Scherpen. The Dutch giant should then return for the coming season. Talks regarding extending the loan are going well and are already well advanced.
