France’s Strengthened Relations with Chad: Military Cooperation and Civil-Military Actions in the Sahel

After the forced withdrawal of Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali, France is redoubling its efforts to strengthen its relations with another country in the Sahel.

Indeed, in this tense context, the CARMIN Joint Tactical Subgroup (SGTIA) conducted, from November 5 to 18, 2023, an intensive training operation intended for the Chadian armed forces.

The completion of this training, crowned by the awarding of diplomas to 15 trainees from the Chadian Nomadic National Guard (GNNT), demonstrates the French desire to maintain and deepen its military cooperation in the region.

At the same time, civil-military actions were carried out in Moussoro. These actions included the distribution of food, school supplies, medical care to the population, and an electrification operation for the town hall.

The 25th Air Engineering Regiment also carried out an operation to remove sand from the local airport runway.

Actions not common in the military environment, which some readily qualify as humanitarian actions, usually reserved for non-governmental organizations.

With around 3,000 soldiers deployed in the region, France claimed to want to fight terrorism and support the armed forces of partner countries, in collaboration with its European and North American allies.

But Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger believe for their part that the initiatives of the French military are far from bearing fruit.

The departure of Niger, following on from those of Mali and Burkina Faso, does not announce a French disengagement from the region but rather a realignment of its strategy in the Sahel, particularly in Chad.

Strengthened cooperation with the country is part of this new dynamic, where France seeks to preserve its influence in the region.
