Written and drawn by Blutch, “The Untamed” appeared in the series “A Tribute to Lucky Luke following Morris”. An album in which the famous solitary cowboy faces a family of bandits who include three enfant terribles. Enough to put his nerves on edge.
New adventures of Lucky Luke, “The Untamed” was put on bookstore shelves on December 1st. A date which was not chosen at random since it coincides with the hundredth anniversary of Morris’ birth.
The Belgian created the lonely cowboy in 1946, and drew him until his death in 2001. It was the cartoonist Achdé who became his official successor. He has already written around ten volumes. At the same time, from 2016, other cartoonists published albums in the form of homage to Morris’s work. After Matthieu Bonhomme (two albums), Guillaume Bouzard, Ralph König and Mawil (one album each), it is the turn of Blutch, spearhead of French comics, to add his stone to the edifice by writing and drawing “The Untamed” in the series “A Tribute to Lucky Luke according to Morris”.
Lucky Luke, an available character
Asked why he decided to make this comic strip, Blutch responds without hesitation in the Vertigo show on December 8: “Along with Tintin, Lucky Luke was one of my first aesthetic shocks. I constantly come back to Morris and Hergé and they always have something to say to me.” And the cartoonist pushes the analysis a little further: “There is a rather mysterious side to Lucky Luke. He is hard to grasp and that is what makes him a fairly accessible character.”
To the term “tribute”, however, Blutch prefers that of “reinterpretation” or “rereading”. The designer, who was honored with the Grand Prix de la ville d’Angoulême in 2009, wanted to bring Lucky Luke back to the episodes that enchanted him when he was a child. For fans of the lone cowboy, there are many references and winks.

Dalton and Rantanplan absent
In this episode, Lucky Luke finds himself with an unnatural role. He must take care of the turbulent children of a family of bandits. With the eldest who spins a bad cotton, the younger who is always hungry, and the youngest with a strong character, the nerves of the phlegmatic cowboy are put to the test.
To create this family, Blutch was inspired by his three children. “I have the same phenomena at home and it’s also a tribute that I pay them,” laughs the father who dedicates this album to his two boys and his daughter.
In “The Untamed”, in addition to the three rascals he must take care of, the vigilante of the Far West faces incompetent characters, such as a disastrous sheriff, inspired by Hergé’s Dupondts, or other even more weary adults. quickly than he from these uncontrollable children.
Special feature of this album: neither Rantanplan nor the Daltons are present. “The sheriff replaces Rantanplan and the Daltons take up too much space,” justifies Blutch. These are authoritarian figures who pull the rug out for themselves. And Joe tires me a little with his Louis de Funès side and his anger.” And the cartoonist concludes: “I prefer heroes.”
