EU opens accession negotiations for Ukraine and Moldova

Ukraine will enter a new phase with the European Union. This Thursday, December 14, the EU decided to open accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, announced in Brussels Charles Michel, President of the European Council, on the first day of a summit of the leaders of the 27 . “A clear signal of hope for the citizens of these countries and for our continent”he added on X (formerly Twitter),

The context of these two bilateral relations which are opening is not trivial. While calls for unity to support the country invaded by the Russian army are increasing, following a year and a half of war and supplies of military equipment, kyiv and Chisinau intend to move closer economically to their allies. At the end of this time, the two former Soviet countries, before the fall of the USSR in 1991, might thus become the 28th and 29th member states of the EU. An enlargement of the Union which, if it succeeds, will require a reform of the institutions due to the growing number of members.

At the beginning of November, Ukraine and Moldova obtained a first green light from thea European Commission which recommended the opening of accession negotiations.

Historic day in the east

« Our state must be in the EU. Ukrainians deserve it », insisted President Volodymir Zelensky.

The European Union’s decision to open accession negotiations with Moldova opens “a new page in our history”greeted President Maia Sandu on Thursday.

“It’s a victory for all of us (…) Two years ago, no one would have imagined such a scenario,” she reacted on Facebook, while this former Soviet Republic has resolutely turned towards the EU since its election at the end of 2020.

Among the prerequisites in the accession process, Ukraine will have to prove that it is continuing its reforms and especially its clean-up in terms of corruption. For decades, the country has in fact been at the bottom of the rankings on the probity of its State and its economy.
