A Apple released this Thursday (14) the first beta version of iOS 17.3 for users enrolled in the company’s testing program. The update includes a new feature called “Stolen Device Protection”, which adds an extra layer in case of theft or theft of the iPhone, preventing the criminal from changing certain settings on the device.
With the new feature, the cell phone owner can link their Apple ID to places classified as safe, such as home, work or college, for example. Thus, the software uses GPS data to identify where the user is and block or unblock some changes in the system, such as deactivating Search, unlinking the account or removing Face ID.
Even in possession of the smartphone, unlock password and code, it will not be possible to change the device’s main features if it is outside the previously registered location. This should prevent thieves from logging out of the Apple ID so that the iPhone’s data can be erased and the phone subsequently resold or scrapped.
For even more sensitive actions, such as changing the password for the Apple ID account connected to the iPhone, the feature adds a “security delay”. In these cases, the user must use Face ID or Touch ID, wait an hour, and then authenticate once more with biometrics. This delay will not occur in familiar locations such as home or work.
How to activate?
To try this feature, you must be signed up and using the beta version of iOS 17.3 and go to Settings > Face ID/Touch ID and Passcode > Stolen Device Protection.
