A Turkish Islamist MP, who suffered a heart attack on Tuesday from the podium of Parliament following criticizing Ankara’s too accommodating policy towards Israel, died on Thursday, the Minister of Health announced.

“Hasan Bitmez, vice-president of the Saadet (Félicité) party who fainted during his speech to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey on Tuesday December 12, died today,” the minister said on the social network Fahrettin Koca.

Hasan Bitmez, 53, collapsed on the podium at the end of a speech denouncing President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s policy towards Israel, in particular the continuation of trade relations with this country.

“Even if you escape the torments of history, you cannot save yourself from the punishment of Allah,” he said before collapsing. The elected official was transferred to the intensive care unit of a hospital in Ankara.
