To reduce electricity consumption during the winter, the government has decided to carry out tests in a department. This initiative aims to determine whether such a device can relieve pressure on the electricity network when energy supplies are compromised, in order to avoid power outages at all costs.
Last October, the government announced the implementation of a test aimed at reducing the electricity consumption of certain households during this winter season. After a very complicated winter of 2022 during which the risk of a blackout loomed over the entire country for several months, the government absolutely had to act to find a concrete solution to this major problem. With these tests, the State hopes to finally find a way to reduce the tension on the electricity network during periods of high tension, in order to avoid power outages at all costs.
According to TF1, it is the department of Puy-de-Dôme which was selected by the executive for this test. The proposal was thus transmitted to the High Energy Council which will deliver its verdict on December 19. The department was chosen because it is very representative of the French average in terms of energy consumption.
Limitation of electricity consumption for 200,000 homes
In total, 200,000 households in the Puy-de-Dôme department will be affected by this limitation of electricity consumption throughout this winter. Affected users will be notified at least three weeks in advance. As for the test, it consists of reducing the power of the meter to 3 kVa for two hours. Therefore, essential electrical appliances, such as the refrigerator, lighting and charging of electronic devices, will not be impacted by this reduction.
« LThe objective is to measure the impact on electricity consumption of such a device, as well as its advantages and disadvantages. This experiment was born from discussions undertaken on our networks in recent months, showing that it might potentially be possible, even in extreme cases, to avoid or limit the use of scheduled outages.», insisted on specifying the Ministry of Energy Transition.
Users who do not wish to participate in this test can refuse by notifying Enedis. Those who accept will receive a symbolic bonus of 10 euros. If the results of this test are conclusive, lowering the power of the meters during the winter might become a concrete solution to avoid power outages during periods of high tension.
