“Kung Fu Panda 4” released its latest trailer on December 13, setting off a new kung fu craze in Hollywood. Directors Mike Mitchell and Stephanie Stine and producer Rebecca Huntley accepted an exclusive interview with World Journal to share their feelings regarding making the film and their love for Chinese culture.
This is the first film directed by new Asian director Sting. She said that when she received a call from DreamWorks inviting her to direct the film, she was so excited that she mightn’t give an immediate answer, and it took 10 minutes for her to call back and agree.
According to her, “Kung Fu Panda 4” incorporates richer and more in-depth elements of Chinese culture, including Chinese cuisine, which is loved by audiences around the world, as well as kites, dragons and Qinggong. There is a scene in the movie where many characters are playing mahjong in a tavern. She spent nearly three hours teaching the animators how to play Mahjong to ensure it was accurately presented on the screen.
Mitchell said that many scenes in the movie were performed by Chinese stuntmen. Sting said: “The way ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ presents Chinese Kung Fu will be unique. It can be said that we have raised Kung Fu animation to a new level. I believe there will be many Asian audiences who like our presentation.”
It has been nearly eight years since the last “Kung Fu Panda 3” was released. Mitchell said that the reason why this sequel took so long to prepare is because the team wanted to convey the story in the best way, especially in terms of using ever-changing technology. “Kung Fu Panda 4” introduces some of the latest filming and animation techniques, including lighting and GoPro cameras already widely used in action movies.
