Netflix releases its first engagement report and will conduct a detailed review of the platform’s mainstream content every six months in the future
Netflix released its first engagement report today, and it’s calledWhat We Watched” (What We Saw), derived from the year-end inventory launched in the past. The first report lists the broadcast status of mainstream content on the platform from January to June 2023, which covers all original and licensed works with a cumulative viewing time of more than 50,000 hours. Each entry will indicate the launch time of the work and whether it is played globally. In the future, Netflix plans to update the report every six months.

The most popular work in the first half of this year was the first season of “The Night Agent” which premiered on March 23. Its total broadcast time reached 812.1 million times, far behind the second-ranked “Mother”. “Ginny & Georgia”, and in third place is the revenge drama “Dark Glory” starring Song Hye Kyo. It is worth mentioning that the report will count dramas and movies together, but due to different media properties, the viewing time of the latter will be relatively shorter. Among all movies, “Mother’s Day” starring Jennifer Lopez ranked highest, ranking 20th with 249.9 million hours.
However, Netflix also emphasized that simply counting viewing data cannot truly represent the influence of a work. “Netflix’s success comes in all shapes and sizes, and isn’t just defined by hours watched,” Netflix wrote on its blog. “We have wildly successful movies and series that have high and low watch times. But most of all, The key is whether a movie or series can excite audiences, and whether the size of those audiences is commensurate with the economics of the content.”
