Tom Holland, learning emotion
The famous actor from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Tom Holland, recently revealed that he sought advice from his MCU peers to perfect his acting. In particular, he learned to simulate crying convincingly, a technique taught by another iconic MCU hero.
Valuable advice
After joining the MCU in 2015 through a deal between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, Tom Holland debuted as Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, in Captain America : Civil War in 2016. Since then, he has become one of the mainstays of the MCU, appearing in Avengers : Infinity War et Endgameand as the protagonist of his own trilogy Spider-Man.
Throughout his time in the MCU, Holland has benefited from the advice of his colleagues, advice that has proven valuable in his recent non-MCU roles. Among these tips, that of Benedict Cumberbatch, interpreter of Doctor Strange since 2016, particularly marked the actor.
An unexpected mentor
According to Holland, Cumberbatch taught him how to fake crying during emotional scenes. The actor reveals that he went through a period where he found it difficult to cry, both in his personal and professional life. However, thanks to Cumberbatch’s valuable guidance, he was able to express his emotions without drawing on his own personal experiences.
”I asked Benedict Cumberbatch for a lot of advice on acting. I was in a phase where I had a really hard time crying, both in my personal life and on set. It affected me a lot. I was so preoccupied with the scenes where I had to cry that I ended up stopping myself from crying… He explained to me a technique he uses with his diaphragm, which almost sounds like laughter. He showed me how to do it on set, and I started using it. Now I love scenes where I have to cry. I feel really comfortable and it’s something I have in my palette. I no longer need to draw on my past or personal experiences.”
And following the MCU?
After the release of the last part of his trilogy Spider-Man : No Way Home in 2021, Tom Holland produced and starred in the AppleTV+ miniseries The Crowded Room. Despite taking a break from acting, Holland is expected to reprise his role as Peter Parker in the fourth Spider-Man installment.
