Adultery, Divorce, and Suffering: Inside the Life of Queen Paola – RTBF’s Groundbreaking Documentary

Adultery, divorce, suffering, sadness… What’s in the docu-event dedicated to Queen Paola

RTBF jealously keeps secret the content of this documentary entitled Philippe, a year with the King of the Belgians. She only provided access to an 11-minute summary of what she calls the key moments of the film. A teaser which contains the note of intent from the director, who followed the king in all his travels and was able to speak with him during around ten meetings of 90 minutes each. “Never has a sovereign, in all our history (that of Belgium, Editor’s note), confided in this way,” explains Nicolas Delvaulx, who promises to tell us more regarding who King Philippe is and especially that she is its function: “What does it actually do? What is it for, quite simply? Who is the man behind the function, what drives him and revolts him? In short, who really is Philippe of Belgium.”

Promise kept? Difficult to say from the 10 short minutes viewed. The king recalls his youth: “I realized that life was not easy very early in my life… And the way people looked at me was not easy. People who judge… At school. It’s hard… I was different, I was a little different”. It must be said, as he himself confides, that he is the first Belgian sovereign to have gone to a normal school. “The generation before, everything was a bit tailor-made, with teachers coming to the house. I haven’t really experienced that…”

He also confesses to having been unsociable. It was his coronation that changed everything. “I observed, but I wasn’t very sociable. This happened much later. In fact, I was ‘at peace’ with it the day I became King. It hasn’t even been ten years.” “I’m not the type to rebel,” he adds. Instead, I internalized and tried to see how to build my own world. I was given capital; I didn’t exactly say that I was going to reject that. I said with that, what am I going to do?”

This is why the documentary “Paola, jardin side” testifies to the historical evolution of the communication of the Royal Palace

There aren’t any juicy revelations a priori. The Palace had set two conditions for accepting the exercise: that the film be bilingual (it will soon be broadcast on VRT) and that nothing relating to the private sphere be discussed.

Note that next week, RTBF will also broadcast another documentary dedicated to a member of the royal family: Laurent: reserve prince. It will be dedicated to Prince Laurent. This is the one offered by the Canvas channel last April. He had then spilled quite a bit of ink.
