Vincent Barand (Franck Dubosc) is a bourgeois very attached to rituals, and for him, Christmas should be celebrated with family. But when his two adult children fail him, he is completely distraught. He manages to convince his wife Béatrice (Emmanuelle Devos) to invite a lonely old lady, Monique (Danièle Lebrun), to their house for New Year’s Eve. The latter is very honored by the invitation, but wants to take with her her friend from the rest home, Jeanne (Danielle Fichaud, Quebec actress seen in “Aline” by Lemercier). All of this comes from a very good intention, but Vincent’s New Year’s Eve will not be easy.
“Merry Christmas” looks like an adaptation of a boulevard play, and that’s normal: the author and director Clément Michel has a playwright’s pedigree. We find in this comedy a bit of the bad spirit of the Splendid troupe, even of the beginnings of Chatilliez (“Tatie Danielle”): there are some nice “trashy” moments in “Joyful Christmas”, which unfortunately do not go far enough . But if the film can be watched without displeasureit is thanks to its casting: next to a fairly sober Dubosc – what good news – there is Emmanuelle Devos who can, for once, express her comic talents in the role of the wife overwhelmed, and the Lebrun/Fichaud tandem, a duo of unworthy old women, sparks.
