The purpose of the PSSP (Strategic Security and Prevention Plan) is to carry out actions to prevent, detect and limit any act and behavior which disrupts collective life and induces a feeling of insecurity. The latter was modified this Monday by the Waremme municipal council. “We want to reorient the PSSP 2023-2024 around the prevention, detection and limitation of public nuisances linked to drug use “, introduced the mayor, Jacques Chabot.
This is because in Waremme, a significant feeling of insecurity is increasingly experienced by Waremmians, this due to drug consumption which only increases over time. “This reorientation is motivated firstly because the focus of the PSSP was on conflict mediation, which is taken up by the Justice of the Peace. But also because various signals reaching us tell us that drug addiction in Waremme is very real. And she worriesinforms the president of the CPAS, Luc Vandormael. It is true that in certain neighborhoods, at certain times, residents can feel a certain insecurity.”
A finding corroborated by statistics from the Hesbaye emergency zone, which explains that from 2020 to 2023, no less than 335 offenses were recorded in Waremme, “mainly for drug possession (241) but also, for the rest, for consumption, manufacturing, import, export…”
Hire a street educator
But that’s without counting on the “black number”as the president of social action further indicates. “This figure is that of unsanctioned cases. We doubled the statistics for the area by sending a questionnaire to the school, socio-educational and health care sectors. We concluded that the time between “The start of drug use and the time when users seek treatment is long, between six and seven years on average. Under these conditions, it is clearly more complicated to turn back when faced with an addiction…”
OK, but what to do then? We must reduce risky behavior. And for that, we would need to deploy a street team via the Social Cohesion Plan (PCS). “But if we have the possibility of hiring a street educator, that would be a plus”adds Luc Vandormael, who specifies that we must promote the social reintegration of consumers. “But first, we must resolve their housing issues and encourage them to seek treatment. This work, already carried out in part by the Addiction Center, must be strengthened.”
The Génération Assuétudes center (reference center for help for drug addicts), is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Avenue G. Joachim 49 in Waremme). 019/32 47 92.
