Around 300 people participated on Tuesday evening in Gosselies (Charleroi) in the information meeting organized as part of the single permit application submitted by Charleroi airport (BSCA). At times, the meeting gave rise to tense exchanges between its officials and local residents worried by the persistence of noise pollution and the possible existence of health risks.
Residents of 9 communities located around the airport were invited. To accommodate all the participants, the teams at the hotel where the meeting was organized had to push back certain removable partitions.
The single permit request has two parts: a first environmental with a request for renewal of the environmental permit, which will expire in 2025, and a second urban planning with the request for the necessary authorizations for the regularization of terminal 2 and the extension several areas such as security, baggage retrieval as well as several boarding gates.

In their presentation, airport officials insisted on their ambitions in terms of reducing CO2 emissions, energy rationalization, reducing noise pollution and even moderating the growth in the number of aircraft movements.
The wishes of airport officials have provoked numerous reactions from residents. Some spoke regarding their daily lives as residents of the airport with its smells of kerosene, its plane noise and its shortened nights.
Others were skeptical regarding the possibility of a reduction in noise pollution as the airport aims to accommodate more flights. Still others have hypothesized health impacts linked to airport activity, in terms of increased premature deaths around the airport and reduced healthy lifespan.
