The founder of the Burg Golling Museum and long-time director Erich Urbanek was appointed professor by State Governor Wilfried Haslauer last week.

He can demonstrate a “museal life’s work” like no other and a corresponding number of awards, from Gollingen’s honorary citizenship to the Republic’s Gold Medal of Merit to the very first “Tennengau Cross”.

Erich Urbanek (already a government councilor) founded the Golling Local History Museum – today’s Burg Golling Museum – in 1969, and then ran it on a voluntary basis for more than 40 years, making a special contribution to the research, preservation and communication of the regional natural and cultural history made. Among other things, he was involved in the discovery of the approximately 242 million year old marine dinosaur Omphalosaurus wolfi, carried out archaeological excavations for several years on the prehistoric hilltop settlement on Nikolausberg near Golling and in 1968 discovered the important rock art station “Jagdfries” in Bluntautal.

An avid collector

“With his collecting activity, he laid the foundation for the Museum Burg Golling’s museum collection, which today includes around 15,000 individual objects,” says the current museum director Sebastian Krutter. “He has made an invaluable contribution to the preservation and visualization of the region’s natural and cultural heritage. It is thanks to his tireless commitment that the Burg Golling Museum is now one of the largest and most renowned regional museums in the state of Salzburg.”

To this day, Urbanek is active as a museum founder in “his” museum, contributes his professional expertise and acts as chairman of the “Friends of the Burg Golling Museum” association.

“Professor Urbanek is not only a highly valued expert on regional natural and cultural history, but also a generous patron, dear colleague and museum teacher to whom we owe a lot and who therefore more than deserves this honor,” says Sebastian Krutter happily.
