“Look at her! She left the camp ten months ago and she’s walking for Carolina Herrera! And he works for Gucci!” Perched on a podium covered in hastily stapled black fabric, in the Radisson Blu Hotel in Nairobi, Joan Okorodudu points to a screen on which photos of South Sudanese models parade. All come from the Kakuma refugee camp in northern Kenya.
It was created in 1992 and welcomes 280,000 people who fled the war, particularly from South Sudan. These refugees live in mud huts, have no running water and mostly survive on one meal a day. The event, which took place on October 28, was aimed at announcing the winner of the Africa’s Next Super Model competition, created by Joan Okorodudu’s Isis Models agency. “The winner is… Achol!” exclaims the 65-year-old Nigerian, hugging a frail young woman, draped in a long black dress.
