Air France Union Dispute at Orly Airport: Implications for Employees

The unions are still not taking off once morest Air France’s decision, announced in mid-October, to leave Orly airport to consolidate all its activities at Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle. Within two years, at the latest, the group will only be represented at Orly by its low-cost subsidiary Transavia.

The inter-union, which brings together all the airline’s organizations, with the exception of the two main pilots’ unions, the National Union of Line Pilots (SNPL) and the Air France Pilots’ Union, filed a notice of strike for Thursday, December 14. The unions are calling, on the same day, the company’s employees to a demonstration, at 10 a.m., in front of Terminal 3 at Orly. In a press release on Tuesday, December 12, the company announced that it “maintains its entire flight schedule for this day”.

The future move to Roissy raises fears of a drop in activity and job cuts at Orly, but also in provincial stopovers in Nice, Marseille and Toulouse. Some 600 company employees should pack their bags for Roissy, the unions estimate. Management has estimated the number of ground and maintenance personnel who will have to join the Charles-de-Gaulle platform at, respectively, 430 and 170. An announced departure, contested by the unions, who would like staff to be kept at Orly to take care of Transavia’s planes and activities.

In addition to the transfers to Roissy, nearly 150 jobs would be threatened in the region. Workforce reductions which, according to the unions, lead to fears of a drop in activity. Particularly with regard to the shuttle, this sky train which connects Orly and Roissy to Nice, Toulouse or Marseille several times a day. Thus, when the company makes five daily round trips to Marseille from Roissy, it operates seven, every day, from Orly. “Tomorrow, once regrouped at Roissy, will Air France maintain the twelve daily rotations to Marseille or reduce activity? », the CGT was already wondering in mid-October.

Florence Parly co-opted, unions “shocked”

In this flammable social context, the announcement of the upcoming appointment of Florence Parly to the board of directors of Air France-KLM irritates employees. Left the airline nine years ago, the former minister of the armed forces returns following being co-opted to succeed Isabelle Parize as director of the Air France-KLM group. A first step before Ms. Parly takes “the succession of Anne-Marie Couderc as chair of the board of directors, at the latest at the end of the 2025 general meeting ruling on the accounts for the year 2024”the airline said in a statement.
