Los 74 construction workers who carry out tasks in the future long-distance transport terminal and in the expansion of the regional hospital, under contract from the company Mocciola SAtoday began a new stoppage of activities for an indefinite period to claim salary differences.
In the Similar conflicts already occurred in previous months, which in principle had been resolved when the company accepted the errors and omissions in the settlement of salaries and promised to save them, all under the intermediation of the Ministry of Labor. But the Uocra denounced that what was agreed was never fulfilled and an assembly held yesterday resolved to return to forceful measures.
The general secretary of Uocra, Nicanor Espinosa, said that “The wear and tear is already a lot at this point, people are tired and there is a general rejection of these managements. That is why this time it is for an indefinite period and will only be lifted with the commitment signed before Labor.”
He explained that they claim additional unpaid wages for work at heights and work with concrete, which are provided for in the collective bargaining agreement. With variations according to age, that plus represents for some workers between 300,000 and 400,000 pesos.
The leader pointed out that the company wanted to present it as a “bonus,” but the workers refused, because it is a legitimate component of the salary. They also rejected a “maneuver” to include foremen and administrative workers “who are not in the agreement” in the benefit.
Another claim of the workers enrolled in the Uocra is for poorly settled salary differences. Espinosa explained that the company mistakenly overpaid several terminal and hospital workers and then deducted those amounts from subsequent salaries, but in a larger amount. “There were people who were paid 95,000 pesos more and were deducted in two installments of 60 thousand”, he denounced.
Correcting these unjustified surcharges is another of the union’s demands. The demands began in September and have already generated several strikes, at the beginning of each month, due to the company’s reluctance to pay what was requested. Even last month the workers picketed in front of the works and from Uocra they complained regarding the indifference of the provincial government, which is the contracting party in both construction projects.
The terminal and the expansion of the local hospital are the largest public works still being carried out in Bariloche today.
The protest began this morning. Espinosa said that this time they are not going to give in and that they will demand more payment guarantees. “It seemed that there was a predisposition from the company, but it turned out that there was not. If they delay things once more, the only thing they do is increase the anger of the workers,” he said.
