The grouping of housing committees and tenants’ associations of Quebec (RCLALQ) released a study on Tuesday showing, according to the organization, a record number of forced evictions.
It is the members of the RCLALQ member groups throughout Quebec who compiled this data.
Between 2022 and 2023, the number of compiled cases increased from 1,525 to 3,531, an increase of 132%.
The organization specifies that this might only be the tip of the iceberg, since the vast majority of cases are never reported to the housing committees.
“We are asking the government of Quebec to modify the legislation to require all resumption, eviction and major work projects to obtain court authorization and to be subject to mandatory monitoring within the following year” , writes the organization in a press release.
No region of Quebec is immune
It is in Montreal that we note the largest increase in the number of cases; an increase of 143%. Moreover, the Petite Patrie housing committee recorded the most cases in the metropolis, i.e. 485, followed by the Plateau Mont-Royal housing committee with 391 cases.
The South Shore of Montreal housing committee recorded 336 cases.
In Quebec, the number of forced evictions increased by 69%, according to the RCLALQ.
