“Some parties are sitting on mountains of cash”: the Greens oppose the PS and the MR on the reform of party financing

Jan Wostyn, co-president of Vista, criticizes these groups for “helping themselves to the state coffers”. In his eyes, “the Belgian parties are the biggest political advertisers in Europe on social media. They rent amusement parks to organize members’ days. (…) This does not have much to do with it. see with the organization of democracy.

Furthermore, according to the four small parties, there is discrimination because the allocation is only granted to parties which obtain seats in parliament, while the money is not intended for the functioning of parliament but must be used in out. The fact that an ordinary citizen can only donate 500 euros to a party, while elected members of the PTB are authorized to donate much larger sums in the form of retrocessions is also discriminatory, believes Mr. Wostyn.

While the parties have never been so rich, the reform of the public allocation system is bogged down

The complaint was filed before the Brussels court. The four parties hope that the court will ask a preliminary question to the Constitutional Court on possible unconstitutional discrimination. A substantive decision might only come following the elections.

The parties’ annual allocations are estimated at more than 75 million euros.
