We already knew it, but it has obviously not improved: Bill Gates and Elon Musk have very tense relations. The Microsoft co-founder received the Peter G. Peterson Leadership Excellence Award this Thursday from the Economic Club of New York.
“Elon is very demanding, probably too much”
On this occasion, the billionaire was questioned regarding his vision of the culture of innovation when he was the manager of his company. In responding, the entrepreneur singled out, not without humor, Elon Musk and Steve Jobs:
Everyone is different. Elon is very demanding, maybe too much. Steve Jobs demanded a lot from his teams, perhaps too much. I consider myself very nice compared to these guys (he bursts out laughing following this sentence Editor’s note).
As our colleagues at Business InsiderBill Gates and Steve Jobs did not always get along very well, even if there were real connections between the two men.
On the other hand, the animosity between Bill Gates and Elon Musk continues. The latest example is very recent. Walter Isaacson tells it in his biography dedicated to the Tesla director.
Thus, Bill Gates confided to him: “As soon as he found out I had sold short, he was very mean to me. But he’s very mean to a lot of people, so you shouldn’t take him too much to heart.”.
Elon Musk then hit the nail on the head: “How can anyone say they are passionate? How can anyone say they’re passionate regarding fighting climate change and do something that reduces overall investment in the company that’s doing the most? This is pure hypocrisy.”
He continues a little later in a message addressed to the author of the book: “At this point, I’m convinced he’s categorically crazy (and an asshole through and through). In fact, I wanted to love him.”
Finally, let us recall that Elon Musk has made a habit of turning on his rival on X. As recently as this year, he said: “I remember the first meetings with Gates. His understanding of AI was limited. She remains so.”
