Siri integration with health data is restricted to new Watches; Apple explains

2023-12-12 00:20:31

As watchOS 10.2released today, the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 — the only models of Apple’s smart watch launched this year — now allow users ask Siri for data stored in the Health app. This includes questions regarding exercise progress, step count, respiratory rate, and even data from third-party devices connected to the device.

You may have wondered, however, why it took so long to release something (at least apparently) so banal. What’s more: why is this new feature restricted only to models launched this year? Deidre CaldbeckApple’s senior director of product marketing for the Apple Watch and Health divisions, clarified this question in an interview given to CNET.

Basically, the feature is only present in the most recent devices as they are the only ones to have the S9 processor, which allows smartwatches to process certain Siri requests locally and with low latency. This, taking into account that Apple did everything to ensure that the data did not need to leave the watch so that it might report it when requested by voice by users.

Katie Skinner, who is the company’s senior user privacy engineering manager, also spoke regarding this issue. According to her, Apple Health products are designed following four privacy principles: data minimization, local processing, transparency e control/security. And Apple was only willing to make the feature available when all these requirements were met.

The possibility of requesting Health metrics from Siri is one of the most requested by users — many of them even complain regarding how difficult it is to reach them using the iPhone application. This problem is recognized by Caldbeck, who highlighted the fact that “never before have users been able to access this data without even touching the screen” on Apple’s smart watch.
