Egyptians continued voting for the second day in the presidential elections, with 67 million Egyptians invited to cast their votes in the elections.

On Sunday, polling stations in Egypt opened their doors at nine in the morning local time to begin voting in the elections that will be held over a period of 3 days.

In front of a polling station in the upscale Zamalek neighborhood in central Cairo on Monday, 67-year-old housewife Nadia Shaheen said: “I came today to elect the president amid very difficult circumstances that the country is going through at the local and international levels.”

She continued to Agence France-Presse: “He must be a strong president in order to advance the country,” noting that “the biggest problem on the scene currently and known to the world is Gaza and displacement.”

“I must participate for the sake of our country and the future of our children,” perfumer Mohammed Abdel Halim told AFP.

The next president called for “justice in everything and for everyone to get their due.”

In addition to current President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, three candidates are running in the elections: Farid Zahran, head of the Egyptian Democratic Party (centre-left), Abdel-Sanad Yamama from the long-established liberal Wafd Party, and Hazem Omar from the Republican Popular Party.

Voter Hammoud Ahmed in Zamalek described the atmosphere as a “beautiful carnival,” and demanded that “the new president impose control on the markets and look at the people, the high prices, and the greed of the merchants.”

For their part, local and regional international community organizations praised the smooth conduct of the electoral process during the Egyptian presidential elections.
