The Decline of Hamas: Signs of Fighters Surrendering in Gaza

There are increasing signs that the terrorist organization is losing support. However, it is difficult to prove that their fighters are surrendering en masse.

Tel Aviv. Dozens of men in underwear sit in a row on a dirty street, most barefoot, their heads bowed. Soldiers in khaki uniforms stand in small groups in the background. It is one of several images from the Gaza Strip that the Israeli army has been distributing for days. The men are said to be Hamas fighters who surrendered to the soldiers. The images apparently serve to underline a message that Israel’s government is trying to spread: Hamas is losing control in Gaza. “To the terrorists of Hamas, I say: It’s over,” said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a video message on Sunday evening. “Surrender – now.”

After Hamas’s unprecedented terrorist attack on October 7, which killed 1,200 people, Israel announced that it would dismantle the organization in Gaza. Israel’s army, the IDF, has been waging war in the Gaza Strip for a good two months. How close it has come to its goal during this time is difficult to estimate from the outside: there is hardly any independent information from the Gaza Strip. But there are at least clues that can be interpreted.
