Egyptian artist Walid Fawaz said that the character “Abdul Ghani”, which he presented in the series “Voice and Picture”, is a “milestone” in his artistic career. In his interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, Fawaz stressed that “suffering shapes the artist’s career.”
At first, Fawaz said, “The success of the character (Abdul Ghani) lies in its difference from the roles he presented before, especially following the audience became accustomed to his presence in the roles of the strong man, the gangster, and the villain.”
Fawaz said, “His delving into the details produced what people saw on screen, and was the reason for his success and people’s praise of him, especially since he is a character full of shortcomings that we hope do not exist in men in general,” pointing out that “in reality, he is an ordinary person who lived among people. He lives the details of their daily lives closely, which made him maintain a large inventory that he used to present the character with balance, as if he was one of the people,” he said, adding that “the artist who interacts with the street is the one who reaches the hearts of the people the most.”

Fawaz believes that “the audience’s reaction to the work was unexpected, amid the tragic events we are witnessing. The heart is sad because of the events in Gaza, and watching the series with this intensity is remarkable,” stressing that “the scope of (Abdul Ghani’s) role in the series is less compared to other roles in the work.” “But the effect remains in the details, not the space,” he said.
Fawaz deliberately gained weight before filming his scenes in the “Sound and Picture” series, before losing weight due to his involvement in filming the “The Return” series, in order to fit the new character: “My role in (The Return) has a romantic streak, and requires different personality traits, and I bet that my feeling It will overcome my appearance, and the Saidi robe has a role in hiding excess weight as well.”

Regarding the details of his role in the “The Return” series, he says: “I present the character (Dr. Fahim), the strong man, who belongs to one of the large families, and competes with the artist Sherif Salama for the love of the heroine of the series, amid family conflicts throughout the 30 episodes.”
Fawaz aspires to present “simple characters from the Egyptian street, such as (Big Brother), or (Delivery Pilot), or an ordinary person, far from the shortcomings of (Abdul Ghani’s) personality.” Fawaz also hopes to “present characters who resemble (Zaini Barakat), or (Rafi’ Al-Azizi), or (Mandour Abu Al-Dahab), in addition to the biographies of the Nobel writer Naguib Mahfouz, the late thinker Dr. Mustafa Mahmoud, and the artist Mahmoud Al-Meligy.”
Fawaz believes that “cinema is currently not in its best state in terms of production compared to previous years. We have come to the age of electronic platforms, and people have begun to prefer them more because they are busy, and television work does not differ in its techniques from cinematic work.”

He stressed that he is “enjoying the drama now, following he has earned his rights to a great extent.”
Fawaz is awaiting the screening of the movie “Shaqou,” produced by Ahmed El-Sobky, with the participation of artists Amr Youssef and Dina El-Sherbiny, in which he plays the role of a policeman, and also the movie “The Secret of the Return of the Invisibility Cap,” in which he plays the role played by the late “Tawfiq El-Daqen” in the original movie.
Delving deeper into the details produced what people saw in “Video and Sound.”
He pointed out that “the new movie is not a second part of the old movie, but it is a new vision, but the events definitely revolve around the boat,” and stressed that “the comparison is definitely in favor of the original movie.”
Regarding theatre, Fawaz said: “I am offered many scripts, but I am currently busy with television drama, which takes up all my time.”
He adds: “I am preoccupied with my next participation following standing in front of Yahya Al-Fakharani on the stage of the National Theater, through the musical operetta (Night of a Thousand Nights) in 2018, across 3 public seasons. I think a lot regarding the script and the show team, and this is what makes me hesitate to accept any theatrical offer now.” .

Evil roles have a special appeal
The Egyptian artist stressed that he was not in a rush to star, saying: “The audience is responsible for putting any artist in the position he prefers, and starring in television drama or cinema is not as easy as some people think, and the role of the artist is research, exploration, and trying to delve deeper into what he presents… I am currently in the stage of influential roles.” And working with a strong team.”
Fawaz expressed his desire to work with Karim Abdel Aziz and Ahmed Ezz, considering the late artist Adel Adham one of the artists he loves and was most influenced by, alongside the late artist Ahmed Zaki, whom he considers “a reason to love acting.”

He believed that “evil roles have a special appeal, especially if they have a comedic streak,” explaining that he “faced obstacles in breaking into the artistic field, which may be impossible to break into without distinguished relationships, or the presence of a person who believes in talent, except following a long time.” Work in art is not a bed of roses as some people think.”
Fawaz adds: “There are several names who helped and supported me, including directors Ahmed Nader Galal, Islam Khairy, Tamer Mohsen, Khairy Bishara, screenwriter Muhammad Amin Rady, writer Waheed Hamed, and director Mahmoud Abdel Tawab.”
Fawaz confirms his presence in the upcoming Ramadan drama season through his participation in the series “One Thousand and One Nights,” starring Yasser Galal, Nour, Yasmine Rais, and Ahmed Badir, directed by Islam Khairy, and written by Anwar Abdel Mugheeth.
