Dengue Fever Prevention and Combat Measures in Guyana: What You Need to Know

2023-12-11 14:45:32

Dengue fever continues to spread in Guyana. At the end of November, Santé Publique France announced an increase in traffic on the Western Coast and on the island of Cayenne. To combat this increase, the Territorial Collectivity of Guyana announces the passage of its spreader during the week of December 11 to 17.

Nearly 2,000 cases of dengue fever have been recorded in Guyana since the start of 2023. The circulation of the virus risks increasing at the end of the year, with the return of the rain. Indeed, mosquitoes – notably Aedes Aegypti which transmits dengue, chikungunya and Zika – breed in stagnant water points.

To combat the spread of the virus, the CTG has set up “la baygonneuse” passages. She has already passed in Kourou last July and in Saint-Laurent du Maroni in October, as well as in Awala and Mana in November.

The community is now tackling Rémire-Montjoly. The insecticide will be distributed in several sectors of the municipality between 4:00 a.m. and 6:30 a.m.. Here is the schedule:

Note that it is not recommended to go out when the spreader is passing. Furthermore, this schedule can be modified. If it rains, the passage will be postponed until the next day, at the initially scheduled time.

To strengthen the fight once morest the dengue virus, the Regional Health Agency of Guyana reminds us of the right actions to adopt.

First, as the rainy season approaches, to prevent mosquito reproduction:

  • Changer water from vases flowers twice a week;
  • Search and eliminate all unnecessary containers containing water in and around the house;
  • Cover water storage barrels and the cisterns with a mosquito net;
  • Clean the gutters regularly;
  • Eliminate all waste around the house. Large waste is also a source of risk and nuisance because it can serve as breeding ground for larvae (car wrecks, wrecks of household appliances, etc.).

To avoid mosquito bites, the ARS recommends:

  • Wear some long clothing ;
  • Sleep under a mosquito net if possible impregnated with insecticide;
  • Regularly apply a repellent on the skin discovery;
  • Use smoke coils outside the house and electric diffusers inside.
