Manila: The Philippine government is considering expelling the Chinese ambassador over China’s attack on Philippine ships. Philippine government sources said China fired water cannons at its ships trying to deliver supplies to Filipino fishermen in the South China Sea.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Teresita Dasa told a news conference that the Philippines has lodged a diplomatic protest once morest China’s actions and has summoned the Chinese ambassador to inquire regarding the details of the matter.

Pictures shared on social media show windows of Philippine boats shattered and decks damaged in the attack. The Philippines said China also fired water cannons at ships trying to redeploy sailors aboard the Sierra Madre, which ran aground on Second Thomas Shoal in the Spratly Islands.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. pointed out that he will protect and ensure the rights of the Philippines in the waterways.

Marcos noted on social media that the attacks and provocations by the Chinese Coast Guard and Maritime Militia once morest their ships and personnel have challenged the government’s determination to protect the country’s sovereignty, rights and jurisdiction in the West Philippine Sea.

In a statement, Philippines spokesman Matthew Miller pointed out that China’s actions are not only a disregard for the security and livelihood of the Philippines, but also a disregard and violation of international law.

Meanwhile, the US State Department accused China of reckless maneuvering in the incident. The US also asked China to be ready to end its dangerous and destabilizing behavior at sea.

But China maintains that the Philippines is responsible for the clash and that the Philippine supply boats ignored multiple stern warnings.
