Disability: women more exposed – Face Face

In France, 15% of women report being disabled compared to 13% of men. They represent 56% of all disabled people. More affected by debilitating chronic pathologies and illnesses, they are also less well taken care of. Without forgetting the influence of socio-cultural factors, such as violence, which alter their physical and mental health.

Should we rename the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which takes place every December 3? Transform it into International Day of Disabled Women? What is certain is that they are largely in the majority in France. A reality which contradicts the received idea that disability results from risky behavior and dangerous working conditions, and therefore concerns men more.

Women in fact represent 56% of disabled people aged 16 or over and living at home, according to the latest data from INSEE, dating from 2018. This is more than their share in the French population (52%).

Disabled women, more numerous because they are older

But this over-presentation is quite logical. The risk of being disabled actually increases with age. However, women, having a higher life expectancy (85 years compared to 79 years), are more numerous in the older age groups.
