“My first reaction was to tell myself that it would not change anything in my life”, he confides at the microphone of VRT in the program “Het Huis” broadcast this Monday evening, as reported by our colleagues from Het Laatste New. “But when the video was broadcast on all the major news sites, my children saw the footage too. They were the ones who alerted me,” he continues. It was at that moment that the Prime Minister understood the seriousness of the situation: “My children had seen someone shoot bullets in my face. For a week I felt bad.” He then doubted his work for a while, he further confided in “Het Huis”.

In this same show, he returned to his condition as “son of Herman De Croo”: “Many people had an opinion regarding me without knowing me. Everyone knew my father. ‘Just because you’re Herman’s son doesn’t mean you have the right to do that,’” he explained. “I was allergic to these comments. I wanted to be me, and not just my father’s son.”

Herman De Croo proud of his son: “Alexander has no enemies”

Our Prime Minister also had a tumultuous student life. He particularly remembers a fight that occurred before his first day at university. “With my best friend Steven, I went out to Ghent, because many of our friends were studying there.” When they learn that a boy is harassing a girl at their school, the two friends decide to intervene: “The last thing I remember is lying on the ground.” He then went to the hospital and found out what had happened: “Apparently the guy who was harassing this girl was a Belgian kickboxing champion and saw us as the ideal training material,” he said. – he said, laughing.

At the time, Alexander De Croo was a minor. He then had to wait for his parents to be able to leave the hospital: “When I heard that, I told myself that it wasn’t going to do it. With my friends, I fled at lightning speed”. “Eventually I had to explain to my parents that I had fought. Because of my sore jaw, I ate soup for a month, so I mightn’t hide it. But the fact that I ran away from the hospital, they are only finding out now.”
