The Trudeau government will announce Monday morning its timetable for gradually expanding eligibility for its coverage plan.

A letter will be sent this week to people aged 87 and over to invite them to register.

Ultimately, in 2025, any person whose annual family income is less than $90,000 and who is not covered by a private plan will be able to benefit from the federal plan.

Registration for the program will be done in stages:

December 2023: people aged 87 and over

January 2024: people aged 77 to 86

February 2024: people aged 72 to 76

Mars 2024: people aged 70 and 71

May 2024: people aged 65 to 69

June 2024: people under 18 and people with disabilities

2025: people aged 18 to 64

From May

Even if registrations will begin this week for the oldest, it will not be until May that beneficiaries will be able to take advantage of federal coverage for a visit to the dentist.

Children under 12 have been covered since last year under an interim plan. From June, they will have to be registered in the new regime.

Only people aged 70 and over will receive a letter inviting them to register for the program. Others will have to use a Service Canada online portal.

For people with disabilities, those receiving the disability tax credit will have access to the program.

Under the federal program, covered individuals whose family income is less than $70,000 per year will not have to pay any co-payment during a visit to the dentist.

The co-pay will amount to 40% of the bill for those whose family income is $70,000 to $80,000, and 60% in the case of an annual family income between $80,000 and $90,000.

The implementation of this dental insurance plan is one of the promises that the minority Liberal government made to the NDP as part of their agreement to avoid general elections until 2025.

The federal government estimates that 9 million people will be eligible for this dental insurance program, the cost of which it estimates at $13 billion over five years.

According to Ottawa, one in three people in the country is not covered by an insurance plan for dental care.
