Around 50 patients with flu or coronavirus symptoms currently come to general practitioner Markus Albrecht’s practice in Dornbirn every day. To prevent it from getting that far, Albrecht advises getting enough sleep, exercising in the fresh air and keeping a good fluid balance.
Pharmacies and drugstores offer a variety of nutritional supplements to strengthen the immune system. “Such as vitamin C, zinc or vitamin D. You can also have the level of vitamin D checked by your doctor, then you can take it in a very targeted manner,” explains pharmacist Guntram Mähr. You can’t completely prevent the flu, but you have the chance of being less susceptible to infections.
The immune system should be strengthened all year round
Hohenems herbalist Angelika Natter, on the other hand, swears by remedies that have been used for centuries. “Peter herb schnapps are very good in winter, and Oxymel, a mixture of honey and vinegar, is also a preservation agent,” explains Natter.
The fact that some people are more susceptible to illness than others is due to their immune system. But it is important that the immune system is strengthened all year round and not just in winter.
