Healthcare provision in Mayotte: the Prime Minister and the Minister of Health and Prevention announce several measures to improve access to health for the Mahorais

Mayotte is currently facing an unprecedented drought episode causing a water shortage in the territory. This situation weighs on a health system already in great difficulty. Ms. Elisabeth Borne, Prime Minister, Mr. Aurélien Rousseau, Minister of Health and Prevention, and Mr. Philippe Vigier, Minister Delegate for Overseas Territories visited the archipelago this Friday, December 8 to announce measures particularly in favor of healthcare provision.

To respond to the concerns of Mahorais, the Government has unveiled a series of measures aimed at stemming the shortage of caregivers and the difficulties of accessing care on the archipelago.

  • Financial aid of 242 million euros to strengthen the hospital supply in the region : this investment will make it possible to expand and modernize the Mayotte hospital center which today provides 70% of care on the island. The work will start in 2024 and plans to modernize the emergency department, maternity ward, and psychiatry, thus strengthening the reception capacities of the establishment.
  • The construction of a second hospital in Combani : as announced by the President of the Republic in 2019, the Prime Minister confirms the creation of a new hospital in the center-west of the territory with the aim of better distributing the provision of care across the archipelago and responding to the problems health of residents. Construction might start at the start of 2024. It will be operated by the French Red Cross.
  • The opening of a second nursing training institute : to respond to the shortage of caregivers in Mayotte, a second training institute will be created at the start of the 2024 school year, thus increasing the number of nursing staff in the region.
  • An increase in premiums for healthcare professionals : to attract caregivers to the archipelago, an increase in their premium will be implemented. The special practice allowance for hospital doctors will also be increased and seniority bonuses improved.

All these measures combined will strengthen the health care offer in Mayotte and will allow simpler and faster access to health for the Mahorais.
