The Brussels Region has already granted nearly 400 certificates to historic elevators, Ans Persoons, the Brussels Secretary of State in charge of Urban Planning and Heritage, announced in a press release on Sunday. At the initiative of the Minister of the Economy Pierre-Yves Dermagne and the former Secretary of State Pascal Smet, the deadline imposed for the modernization of elevators with historical value was extended by five years. A new category of historic elevators has been included in the amended royal decree, giving owners of historic elevators in the Brussels region, Flanders and Wallonia until the end of 2027 to make the necessary modifications.
“The decided postponement proved necessary to identify appropriate solutions which reconcile strict security rules with heritage constraints. Without this, our historic elevators were doomed to disappear or had to be completely reconverted. Thanks to the new directives, we will preserve this beautiful heritage for future generations“, commented Pierre-Yves Dermagne.
