According to the editor’s interlocutor, there was no romanticization of crime as such, but many people, mostly young, still wanted to become bandits.

“Those guys who might afford to behave the way they wanted, certain structures allowed them to do this and there was nothing for them,” said the former criminal. “People around me saw this and understood that some people might do it, some people mightn’t. And who can, apparently, they are really good-looking, and that’s why it’s cool. I personally know cases when people were not punished for murder and robbery. All this happened before my eyes, I experienced it all. When people were imprisoned for drinking a bottle of vodka, and people who were beaten to death were simply scolded. In connection with the Russian mentality, a young man who has not yet achieved anything looks at his neighbor, who goes to rob, hooligans, pays whoever he needs, and he gets nothing for it. And then he buys a beautiful new “ten”, and the girls are there. The person thinks: “How cool, I want that too.”
