He is one of the most illustrious men of letters and sciences of the Muslim religion in Senegal. A great exegete, Elhadji Amadou Dème has indeed distinguished himself by his undisputed mastery of the Holy Quran with his gigantic work “Diyaa’hu Nayyirayni”, which only represents a small part of his bibliography. He died on December 10, 1973.

Elhadji Amadou Dème is a name that no longer needs to be introduced among dignitaries and researchers in Islam. It’s difficult to make a shortlist of the most prolific scholars without mentioning him, even if in fact the man is generally unknown to the new generation. If this is so, it is because the Sheikh, born in Mankanao in 1890, was never interested in anything other than learning and teaching the Koran, at the same time as jurisprudence and so many other Islamic sciences. This is how he stayed in the villages of Fouta de Médina Ndiathbé and Walaldé where he learned respectively fiqh from Alpha Mamadou Aw and astronomy, mathematics and Tariqa Tidiane from Thierno Ibrahima Aw.

From the age of 5, when he began to learn the Holy Book until his death, Elhadji Amadou Dème devoted his entire life to the Koran. After learning it and exploring its deepest secrets, the holy man dispenses it in such a remarkable way. Polyglot, he teaches disciples from various backgrounds thanks to his mastery of Wolof, Pulaar, Arabic, Diola and Mandinka. In 1922, he made the pilgrimage to Mecca and from there bore the title of “Elhadji”.

However, his most widespread work remains the exegesis of the Koran which he carried out with his own means from 1938 to 1959. It consists of 20 volumes of 2 kg and 450 pages each, a work which synthesizes the texts reference in matters of exegesis and a detailed explanation of the points of divergence between jurisconsults of the four schools (mazaahib). More than a dozen other works are to his credit, which explains the honorary distinctions that the Republic consecrated to him: knight and commander of the National Order.
