A 47-year-old woman died Saturday evening in a probably accidental fire in a building in Colmar in France, we learned from the public prosecutor’s office. Swiss people living in furnished tourist accommodation nearby will have to be relocated.
The fire broke out around 8:00 p.m. in a building in the city center whose stairwell and ground floor apartment were on fire, according to firefighters. The preferred hypothesis is that of a fire of accidental origin, according to the prosecution.
The deceased is a 47-year-old woman from Colmar. No other victims were reported in this disaster which occurred during the Christmas market period, a traditionally very touristy period in Alsace.
The mayor of Colmar, Eric Straumann, indicated to the regional daily L’Alsace that 17 people, notably Spaniards and Swiss mostly residing in furnished tourist accommodation nearby, will have to be rehoused. A psychological unit was set up in a neighboring restaurant to accommodate people present in the building. Around sixty firefighters were mobilized.
