The approximately 200 demonstrators gathered in Louvain this Saturday pointed out a policy of the brewing giant which, according to them, does not sufficiently finance local brands.

Some 200 people gathered on Saturday in front of the AB Inbev headquarters in Louvain, to protest once morest the management of the brewing giant’s personnel. A hundred workers Germans were notably present to denounce the restructuring planned at the Diebels factory in North Rhine-Westphalia. Protesters also pointed to a policy they say does not adequately fund local and historic brands, as well as a lack of staff.

In addition to the Belgian and German unions, the European Federation of Food, Agricultural and Tourism Unions (EFFAT) and the International Union of Food, Agricultural, Hotel and Catering Workers , tobacco and related industries (IUF) also participated in the action.

“The company chooses to dismantle its human capital, destroy jobs, both in Europe and elsewhere in the world, and trample workers’ rights.”

In a manifesto, the unions denounced the fact that AB Inbev profits do not pass on to workers. Despite financial stability, “the company chooses to dismantle its human capital, destroy jobs, both in Europe and elsewhere in the world, and trample workers’ rights.”

The brewing group has decided to let go of 60 employees from the German Diebels factory. The trenovators fear for the future of the site. “AB Inbev must put people before profits and invest in local brands, health, safety and well-being of workers,” argued the unions.

The demonstrators braved the bad weather in Louvain, where no member of the management was present. The president of the German NGG union, Johannes Specht. believes that the union union is useful. “I think that he is important that we collaborate with colleagues across borders and stand up for the same course of action to keep our jobs“, did he declare.

For the secretary of the Christian union ACV, Sander Mouton, the restructuring cannot be explained: “It is like removing a wheel from a car that already only goes 50 km/h instead of 120. This requires people to take care of machines on their own and perform multiple functions. This creates a lot of pressure at work and also weighs on safety.”

Sander Mouton points out that these are especially small local businesses which are gradually being closed. “We are giving them less and less attention, even though they are important for the local economy and for the people living near the brewery,” he lamented.
