Kottayam ∙ Mourning procession carrying the mortal remains of Kanam Rajendran, who led the CPI with strong words and strict stance, in his hometown Kottayam. After a public vigil at the CPI’s Kottayam District Committee office, the body will be brought to Kanam’s home. After paying a public darshan at the Pattam PS memorial, which is the CPI headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram, he left for his native Kottayam as a mourning procession. Kanam Rajendran, who was staying at Amrita Hospital following having his right leg amputated below the knee due to diabetes, passed away yesterday at half past five. He was initially admitted to the ICU following suffering a mild heart attack yesterday followingnoon. A massive heart attack followed. He was the state secretary of the CPI since 2015 and was on leave for three months due to health reasons. When MN Govindan Nair and C. Achuthamenon were in the leadership of the CPI, Kanam joined the party state secretariat in 1982 at the age of 32 and was elected MLA from Vazhur in 1987. After that he competed 3 times but might not win.

The CPI has come to the fore through the ups and downs of the hierarchy. After PK Vasudevan Nair, Kanam, who is the state secretary of CPI from Kottayam district, reached that position in 2015 in the state conference held in Kottayam itself. Later he became secretary in Malappuram and Thiruvananthapuram state conferences.

Kanam’s demise came at a stage when Kanam had achieved complete dominance as secretary by taming the opposition voices. He is also a member of the CPI Central Secretariat. He was the state president and general secretary of AITUC. He has been a member of the CPI State Council for 53 years. Kanam, who entered the political arena through AISF, became the state secretary of AIYF in 1970. He has also worked as Kottayam district secretary of CPI for 2 times.
