The Edmonton Oilers picked up where they left off following a five-day rest Wednesday night. Zach Hyman in particular was visibly excited to return to action and he scored the third hat trick of his career in a 6-1 victory for his team once morest the Carolina Hurricanes.
Hyman is the fourth player this season to score more than one hat-trick, joining Auston Matthews, Frank Vatrano and Brayden Point. His first came on November 11 once morest the Seattle Kraken.
Connor McDavid and Mattias Janmark each provided three assists, and the prolific No. 97 passed Jari Kurri as the third-leading passer in organization history. Stuart Skinner stopped 38 shots, seeing Jordan Staal spoil his shutout at 7:05 of the third period.
The Oilers extended their winning streak to five in a row and have not suffered a defeat since their loss in Raleigh two weeks ago. So they found the Hurricanes once more, but in Edmonton this time.
Ryan McLeod opened the scoring following just 27 seconds of play. And 13 seconds later, Connor McDavid fed Mattias Ekholm to make it 2-0 once morest a stunned Hurricanes. With an assist on this goal, Evan Bouchard extended his streak of games with at least one point to nine.
Zach Hyman in turn found the back of the net with a superb maneuver to make it 3-0, before adding more following a beautiful tic-tac-toe play with McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.
Warren Foegele also joined the party once morest his former team, he who started his career with the Canes before being traded to the Oilers in the summer of 2021. He escaped before beating Antti Raanta.
Hyman finally completed his hat trick at 9:35 of the third period, good for his 15th goal of the season. All initiated by a costly turnover by Michael Bunting at his blue line when McDavid stole the disc from him in order to pass on a gift to his teammate.
