The former president of Vooruit, Conner Rousseau, presents his resignation as Flemish MP with immediate effect. He made this known in an email to Parliament Speaker Liesbeth Homans on Thursday, he wrote on Instagram.
Conner Rousseau resigned three weeks ago following outcry over statements that were later deemed racist once morest the Roma community by his party, Vooruit. Melissa Depraetere succeeded him as party president.
Rousseau still held a seat in the Flemish Parliament following his resignation, but he is now resigning. “My current personal situation does not allow me to have a sufficient impact in the coming weeks,” he wrote to Mr. Homans. “And then I want to be honest with people. I will work on myself in the coming times. I want to come out of this stronger as a human being. But I don’t want to do it at the expense of parliament. That wouldn’t be fair. This is why I made this choice.
“I want to apologize once once more,” Rousseau said on Instagram. “For the ugly mistake I made. And also say sorry to those I disappointed. And most of all, I’m angry with myself. »
He says he dreamed of going into politics himself when he was a child. “But this dream has become a nightmare in recent months. »
He does not specify in his post whether or not he will still be a candidate in the 2024 elections. In November, even before his resignation as president, Vooruit announced that he would lead the East Flanders list for the Flemish parliament. But it is not certain that Rousseau remains at the top of the list. “I will be carrying out missions as a freelancer in the coming months. At my own pace,” we can read. A decision was expected this weekend during a provincial congress but the region’s socialist federation asked Monday for the meeting to be postponed. A new date has not yet been set. The other provincial congresses will, however, take place as planned.
Rousseau still asks Vooruit supporters to “take stock”. “It’s time to get back to talking regarding people’s problems.” Questions that really matter. And I hope that my departure will contribute to that. »
