2023-12-07 09:55:00

According to Statistics Austria, 247,200 people were looking for work, 11.5 percent more than a year ago. “The recession is having a noticeable impact on the labor market,” says Statistics Austria General Director Tobias Thomas.

The number of employed people only increased in the service sector – it fell in agriculture as well as in industry and commerce. On average, 4,532,100 people aged 15 and over were employed between July and September. Compared to the same period last year, this means – despite the recession – a further increase of 41,000 employees (plus 0.9 percent). The employment rate, i.e. the proportion of employed people among all people aged 15 to 64, was 78.9 percent for men and 70.9 percent for women and was 74.9 percent overall.

Construction affected by weak economy

The increase in the number of employed people in the third quarter compared to the same period last year was solely due to the significant increase in employed people in service occupations (plus 80,100 or plus 2.6 percent). The number of employed people fell in the reporting period in the economic sectors of agriculture and forestry (minus 19,800 or minus 12.3 percent) and industry and commerce (minus 19,200 or minus 1.6 percent). Construction was particularly affected by the weak economy.

The number of unemployed according to international definition rose this year in the third quarter for the third time in a row year-on-year. Despite the continued high number of vacancies, 247,200 people were looking for work between July and September, 25,500 people or 11.5 percent more than a year ago. The unemployment rate rose by 0.5 percentage points to 5.2 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year. There was a slightly stronger increase among men (plus 0.6 percentage points) than among women (plus 0.3 percentage points).

High increase also among foreign nationals

According to international definition, the increase in the unemployment rate among foreign nationals was also more significant, with an increase of 1.7 percentage points to 10.4 percent, than among Austrians (plus 0.1 percentage points to 3.8 percent). The unemployment rate rose above average, even among people with at most compulsory schooling – by 1.4 percentage points to 12.8 percent.
