Representatives of the EU and China have begun discussions on mutual trade relations and the geopolitical situation. State and party leader Xi Jinping said at the state guesthouse in Beijing that previous dialogues on trade and the environment this year had achieved rich results, as Chinese state television reported on Thursday morning (local time).

Given the global political situation, he spoke of an “unexpected change.” China and the EU must work together for global stability and development, he said.

EU Council President Charles Michel and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen traveled from Brussels with other delegates to the summit. China and the EU have a “significant but complicated economic and geopolitical relationship,” von der Leyen wrote before the meeting on Platform X (formerly Twitter). The results of the talks would have an impact on people’s prosperity and security.

In Beijing, the EU primarily wants to address the unbalanced trade balance with the world’s second largest economy and China’s role in Russia’s war of aggression once morest Ukraine. Beijing is likely to want to talk primarily regarding the EU investigation into Chinese electric car subsidies.
