A consultancy promoted by IDC points to the strong interest of Latin American companies in satellite connectivity, a modality that should be progressively expanded in the region until 2028. According to the research, around 20% of companies should invest in satellites in low Earth orbit over the next five years in order to offer a better experience.

According to information, low latency in data exchange should be one of the biggest benefits of using satellite connectivity compared to others. This should bring advantages especially to the Internet of Things (“IoT”) segment, which has been widely developed with the arrival of new network technologies.

Low orbit satellites are located at an altitude between 500 km and 1,500 km and have a useful life of up to 10 years, potentially revolutionizing data infrastructure. These numbers were presented in an online event held this Wednesday (6) which presented the main trends in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector.

As IDC suggests, investments in the IT market are expected to grow 11% in Latin America next year, indicating that companies are keeping an eye on this growing category in recent years. In the Brazilian market, investments directed to information technology are expected to increase by 12% in 2024, surpassing neighboring nations.

It is also important to highlight that satellite connectivity is coming to smartphones following the launch of the iPhone 14 line in 2021 by Apple. However, the feature is still a challenge for Android manufacturers, who are working to offer this connectivity as quickly as possible on their high-end devices.
