City halls use AI to improve revenue collection

The first half of this year was not easy for most of the 5,570 city halls spread across Brazil. According to a survey of National Confederation of Municipalities (CNM), 2,362 cities presented a primary deficit in the first six months of 2023. The number is almost seven times greater than that recorded in the first half of last year, the total of which was 342. In a scenario like this, managers have increasingly resorted to technology, especially solutions involving artificial intelligence, to improve tax collection and combat tax evasion. Some of these solutions will be presented at Smart Gov Brasil, which takes place in the city of Rio de Janeiro, between December 6th and 8th. The event is promoted by the National Association of Smart, Technological and Innovative Cities (Anciti) and partners.

Anciti’s proposal is to be a showcase of successful cases in public management, encouraging the sharing of the most innovative solutions whose results cause positive impacts on the lives of citizens. Among the city halls that will present works are Rio de Janeiro, Niterói (RJ), Pindamonhangaba (SP), Jaguariúna (SP), Contagem (MG), Porto Alegre (RS), Santa Maria (RS), Recife (PE) and Petrolina (FOOT).

The president of Anciti, Johann Dantas, highlights that in a scenario in which everyone lives with the expectation of tax reform – whose greatest promise is the simplification of taxes, transparency and stimulation of economic growth –, in practice, there are still many doubts regarding what the outcome will be. real impact of the new legislation on municipal revenues. “As a result, the mayors mobilized to do their homework with the help of technology”, he highlights. “So, the best strategy will always be to invest in tools that provide better management of public spending”, he adds.

Johann Dantas reinforces that Anciti aims to contribute to the construction of an ecosystem of smart, technological and innovative cities in Brazil, capable of promoting sustainable development, social inclusion and improving the quality of life for all citizens. “Our idea, as an institution, is to promote the exchange of knowledge and best practices between information and communication technology (ICT) entities in Brazilian municipalities”, explains the head of the association, remembering that Anciti is only two years old. .

For him, the biggest challenge will be to strengthen the performance of municipal ICT companies and encourage collaboration between cities, aiming to create integrated innovation networks that can meet the demands and needs of each region. “We are working tirelessly so that as many cities as possible wake up to the importance of using technology in municipal management”, he emphasizes.
