Face ID could go under the iPhone screen in two years

LG Innotek has started the development of a system aimed at placing the front camera of a smartphone under the screen to hide its presence. Apple might benefit from this work within two years, reports the South Korean site, The Elec.

Samsung already uses this principle for some of its devices, including the latest foldable models. On the battery side, housing the camera under the surface of the screen transforms it into a large homogeneous surface. On the front side, as light passes through a layer of materials, it loses intensity and the performance of the camera is reduced.

Samsung failed to properly hide the camera under the screen of its Galaxy Z Fold 3

LG seeks to overcome this defect by working with new lenses for the front optics, which are able to capture more light and avoid these losses in colors, definition and sharpness of the images. Apple might start using this device for Face ID. Enough to already help reduce the size of the pill at the top of the screen. Then it would be the turn of the camera module to blend into the surface as long as the results do not involve too many compromises on the images produced.

This technology was first shown three years ago and it is still not at a satisfactory level despite progress, while photo capabilities have become a major criterion for any new phone.
