Andre ter Stegen will be out for several weeks due to a back injury

League Plus – Barcelona goalkeeper, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, needs back surgery and may lose his starting place with the German national team before the European Championship.

Barcelona announced on Tuesday that Ter Stegen will undergo surgery to address lower back problems that have been bothering him recently. The Catalan club did not mention how long he is expected to be out of action.

Ter Stegen played in eight of Germany’s first nine matches of 2023 following key player Manuel Neuer broke his leg in December 2022 during a post-World Cup skiing trip. Neuer is ready once more and playing regularly for Bayern Munich.

Ter Stegen played 38 times for Germany over 11 years, but was always seen as an understudy to Neuer. Ter Stegen has yet to play a single match in a World Cup or European Championship.

Kevin Trapp played two friendly matches for Germany last month with Ter Stegen injured. Neuer returned to Bayern on November 1 and has played in all seven of the club’s matches in all competitions since then and has shown no signs of any fitness issues.

Ter Stegen (31 years old) missed the Spanish League matches once morest Rayo Vallecano and Atletico Madrid, as well as Barcelona’s Champions League match once morest Porto.

He played 17 matches with the club this season, keeping a clean sheet in eight matches and conceding 15 goals.

Iñaki Peña is Ter Stegen’s replacement at Barcelona. He made key saves in the team’s 1-0 win over Atletico on Sunday.
