Virginia Grass Fire: CFS Efforts Save Potential $2.5M Losses

2023-12-06 09:58:31

At around 2:20pm today, crews were called to a fire in long grass in-between numerous glasshouses on Old Port Wakefield Road, near Angle Vale Road, in Virginia.

Approximately 70 CFS volunteer firefighters attended the scene with 16 trucks. Crews were supported by SA Police, 3 aircraft bombers, 1 Blackhawk and 2 observation aircraft.

The fire burned approximately 4 hectares in total, destroying a number of glasshouses and some crops. Total losses are estimated at $150,000.

The diligent work of CFS volunteers prevented the fire from spreading any further, saving approximately $2.5million of potential losses. The CFS wishes to acknowledge the commendable efforts of all those involved in responding to this incident.

The fire was caused by an angle grinder.

CFS crews will remain on scene into the night, to mop up and black out the fire. They will also continue to monitor the area over the coming days.

With tomorrow being a Total Fire Ban day for 5 districts across the State, this is a timely reminder for the community not to undertake particular activities which may start a fire, and to be aware of the restrictions which come into force in the declared districts from midnight tonight.
