The French equipment manufacturer highlights persistent problems in the supply chain.
Faced with the rapid and massive recovery in global air traffic, and to meet their decarbonization objectives, the world’s major airlines are increasing orders for new aircraft from major manufacturers Airbus and Boeing. Orders which amount to dozens or even hundreds of devices.
Enough to put pressure on the industry. And despite the ramp-up in production, many problems persist, particularly in the supply chain.
So, the chief executive of French aircraft engine maker Safran said global supply chains were still struggling to shake off a series of external shocks and warned once morest setting production targets unrealistic.
Deliveries that go yo-yo
Speaking to journalists during a visit to Morocco to sign a pact on boosting local supply chains, chief executive Olivier Andries reiterated a provisional target of 2,000 LEAP engine deliveries in 2024 and called the figure a “already very ambitious”.
These problems are illustrated in the number of aircraft delivered by manufacturers. Thus, those of Airbus continued to yo-yo in November with 63 new aircraft delivered to its customers, eight fewer than in October, the aircraft manufacturer announced on Tuesday.
Since the start of the year, the industrial giant has delivered 623 aircraft. It will therefore need to deliver 97 in December to meet its objective of 720 devices for the whole year.
The month of December is traditionally the most active of the year, with 98 aircraft delivered in 2022, 93 in 2021 and 89 in 2020, when the aircraft manufacturer had drastically reduced its production due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Record orders for Airbus
For several months, deliveries have fluctuated upwards or downwards from one month to the next, a sign of difficulty in ramping up production.
Airbus intends to go from 40 aircraft in the A320 range produced each month in 2020 to 75 monthly in 2026.
The group continued to accumulate orders in November, with 113 aircraft, including 15 A350s from Emirates.
Since the start of the year, the European aircraft manufacturer has received 1,512 gross orders, or 1,395 net orders taking into account cancellations and modifications, which constitutes one of the best performances in its history.
